Step 1Step 2Step 3Step 4The Process of Comic Book Art is a truly collaborative one. First a Writer develops a script for a book and then once that script is approved it goes to an Artist, or Penciler. The Penciler interprets the script and illustrates each frame for each page, in pencil. From there the penciled pages go to another illustrator called an Inker. The Inker renders the penciled art to enhance the quality of the penciled artwork (as it relates to publishing & printing) without changing the feel or style of the work, into a camera-ready piece of black & white artwork. From there the black & white artwork, or image, is scanned and ready for color art, which is where I step in.Step 1: This is the finished black and white image I receive from the Inker ready for color art.Step 2: I take the black and white image and begin Flatting the page. In the Flatting process I cut out the basic images & areas and fill them with flat colors. This enables me to see the separation of the different images and from there I can begin rendering.Step 3: In the rendering stage I produce not only color, but shading, texture, lighting and mood to help give a three dimensional and dramatic feel while following the light and shadow of the original art. With the background and characters fully rendered it's now time for special effects.Step 4: The special effects step is where I produce additional lighting effects, added depth and atmosphere to the page. With this particular cover I gave the window in the background additional lighting effects with a glowing shaft of light to make it more dramatic and emphasize Snake Eyes. In the foreground I used atmospherics to produce additional depth, further separating the foreground characters into separate planes and giving it a more realistic quality. Other additions include subtle glows to Baroness's glasses, her pistol and a soft glow around the foreground character following the rim light. With the fx done the page is then separated into a file ready for the printer.
